Illinois Cattle Feeders Day
Illinois cattlemen and cattlewomen will have the opportunity to hear from several experts at the 2019 Illinois Cattle Feeders Meeting. The meeting, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on March 6, will be held at Sauk Valley Community College just outside of Dixon. An optional Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training will be held immediately following the meeting. “This meeting is a must-attend for Illinois cattle producers. First-hand access to this kind of knowledge in the cattle industry is rare,” says Travis Meteer, beef cattle educator for University of Illinois Extension. Speakers include Kent Bacus, director of international trade and market access for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, who will discuss tariffs, trade talks, and where U.S. beef stands in major international markets. Jim Lowe, associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at U of I, will discuss operational economic influencers in feedlot profitability. Lowe will share insight about key factors like throughput, finish weight, and cost of gain, and how they can make or break a feedlot enterprise. Josh McCann, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at U of I, will share some new research concerning feeding behavior and how it relates to profitability. Feeding behavior characteristics such as daily intake, daily intake variation, meal size, and meal frequency will be discussed. Brian Dorcey, beef technical services veterinarian with Zoetis, will discuss identifying and managing health concerns in the feedlot. Dorcey will outline some tips for fast and thorough treatment of respiratory disease and other health challenges. A market update and outlook will be given by Lance Zimmerman, an analyst with CattleFax. Zimmerman will give producers insight into current and future market dynamics. Producers will also have the opportunity to become BQA-certified. Travis Meteer will lead the training, which will take place from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. for a fee of $20. “Come join fellow cattlemen in Dixon on March 6 to enjoy an opportunity to gain knowledge for today’s cattle industry,” Meteer says. Pre-registration is suggested for the meeting to ensure adequate meal number, however there is no fee.
